Transfusion Medicine & Stem Cells (MBS)

Program Overview

In collaboration with the Regional Laboratory and Blood Bank of the Ministry of Health, the Master of Biomedical Sciences -Transfusion Medicine & Stem Cells track (MBS-TMS) will introduce graduate students to basic science concepts in transfusion medicine and stem cells transplantation along with research methods and presentation skills. This program focuses on principles of transfusion medicine, red blood cell biochemistry, basic genetics, stem cells transplantation and biology. It will also involve introduction to quality management systems and their applications in the blood transfusion process. In addition, the track aims to strengthen the principles of research and presentation skills (oral and written presentation skills), as well as to improve the clinical practice.

The two year 42 credit hour thesis masters is offered to individuals holding a Bachelor of Medicine or Applied Medical Sciences such as clinical laboratory science/medical technology. It is designed to provide graduates with advanced knowledge in consultation services to other health care workers and the administration and supervision of transfusion and stem cells services. There will be five subject courses with both clinical and theoretical training. The clinical portions will be performed at Ministry of Health (MOH) Blood Bank & associated Stem Cell Laboratories. Upon completion the student would be awarded a degree in Master of Biomedical Sciences in Transfusion Medicine and Stem Cells from Alfaisal University.
